Memoir Project:
In response to the novel "The House On Mango Street", by Sandra Cisneros, students were required to create a memoir book about our selves and what makes us unique in the author's style. The book had to include three vignettes, three poems and one visual for each. We edited our writing to perfection by doing peer critiques and revising. After all the blood, sweat and tears, we held an exhibition to display our books, and a few of our favorite writing pieces were performed for our families to hear. Here are a few of the writing and visual pieces I created...

Greek Playwriting Project:
In this project, groups of students were required to write a tragic play after learning about greek theatre. My play was about a teenage boy named Drew and a girl named Blair who are in love. Drew plans to propose to Blair before she leaves for college hoping she will stay with him, since he is not attending any colleges. Blair does not want to get married and doesn't want to miss out on a great opportunity like UC Berkeley. To get what he wants, he makes a terrible mistake that leaves him with nothing. My role in this project was the big idea expert. I was incharge of the advertising for the play. I feel that I put a lot of effort into this play because I helped my group members a lot, especially the writing. I am most proud of the poster because I spent a lot of time on it and I think It looks pretty great. If I could change anything, I would probably make our play a little less dramatic and include more comedy. Click this for a link to our play and the picture below is the poster my group and I made to present in class:

Greek Play Production Project:
After writing our plays, we then voted on the best play out of all of them and performed it. The best play in my class was called "The Three Deadly L's" written by Alicia Dukes, Francisco Garcia, Emily Everett, and Brigitte Garcia. It was about a love triangle where two boys love the same girl. One is blinded by jealousy and ends up losing the love of his life. I played the role of Ashley who is the lead girl in the play. At the judged performance, I had the honor of winning "Best Actress" out of the whole 9th Grade. "The Three Deadly L's" also won "Best Overall Play" and I am so proud of all the work our class has put into the production. If I could change anything about this project is that we have more time to practice the sound on stage because that didn't really turn out well on the final performance. Overall, this was probably my favorite project I have done so far this year and I can't wait to see what other cool projects this year will bring.

Into The Wild Project:
In this project, students read and analyzed the book "Into The Wild" by Jon Krakauer which is about a man named Christopher McCandless who disagrees with the ways of society and leaves on his journey to Alaska. We wrote in journals throughout the project about the book, our relationship with nature, today's society and more. We then took a three day camping trip to Anza Borrego Desert to explore the wilderness and unleash our inner adventurers. Throughout the trip, we continued to write in our journals and create illustrations of our campsite, the oasis and more! I learned that the beauty of nature can do so much more than most people think. It can allow you to see what great things in life we take for granted like the sunrise in the early morning or the animal life we never knew existed. I am most proud of my Into The Wild book because I put so much time into it and the final product turned out beautiful. I was mostly proud of the front cover because I learned a cool new art technique. If there is anything I would change about my book, I would probably make some of the pages pop up to make it more interactive. My group's journal was one of the chosen ones to be displayed on the Into The Wild Bus in the main commons. Here are some of the artifacts from our book:

Happiness Project:
In this project, students learned about the study of happiness and created research binders about different elements of happiness. (lifestyle, relationships, mindfulness, flow, depression, etc.) We learned about annotating articles using SOAPSTone (Subject, Occasion, Audience, Purpose, and Tone), MLA formatting for citing our sources and writing topic papers. The final product was to create a children's book, cook book, field guide, etc. My partner and I chose to make a cook book with literal and figurative recipes on how to achieve happiness. I am most proud of our final product because we worked really well as a partnership and ended up creating a beautiful cook book filled with original artwork. If I could change anything, I would probably add even more drawings. Although, we were working for a deadline so we prefered quality over quantity.
